#17 Tarmacking and Story Writing

Today has been a strange kind of day, mostly because I am still half asleep.  This morning I was woken at 8.30 by a loud rumbling outside and the beeping of a truck reversing.  It was loud.  It was annoying.  Turns out the drilling yesterday was to prepare my road for being tarmacked (not sure on the spelling on this as I know tarmac doesn't have a 'k' but 'tarmaced' and 'tarmacing' doesn't quite look right).  So they have been tarmacking my road all day.  And everytime the big truck thing comes past the whole house seems to shake.  However, it has been quiet for about 15 minutes with no beeping and no rumbling so maybe they are finished (fingers crossed).

So as usual I haven't really had much to do today but I finally managed to start a story I have had in mind for a while.  It is my plan to send out some work before the end of the year and I figured short stories were the place to start.  Turns out short short stories are hard to write.  I was aiming for 1000 words which seems to be the average in most women's mags, but only managed 680.  But that is just the first draft and it needs a LOT of work before I'll even consider sending it out.  Thankfully my tutors are running extra classes once a week until June so hopefully I'll be able to get some good advice on how to make my story work - at the moment it feels as if it's lacking something but I just don't know what.

My fingers being crossed didn't do anything as the rumbling has started up again.  I am so tired and would really like to take a nap but I can't due to the fact that my bed vibrates every 5 minutes of so (my room is downstairs with my window looking out to the road).  So I am going to have to stay awake I guess.

  1. Good luck with the short story. I'm sure all the editing and rewriting will help to boost the word count! Also, hope the noise stops soon so that you can take a nap! x

  2. Uugghhh I hate it when someone is clattering and battering away outside my window! My sympathies ... but luckily it won't last forever.

Sounds like you're making writing progress, keep it up!
